Selvin, a Portland resident for ten years, came to the U.S. fleeing
gangs and poverty at a young age. He was about to receive his high
school diploma when he was detained by local police, and is now at risk
of being deported despite his long-standing leadership and contributions
to the Portland community. Selvin's story is the most recent of
hundreds across the U.S. highlighting the need for federal action on
immigration reform this year.
Speakers on the call will urge the Department of Homeland Security to use discretion by allowing Selvin to stay in the U.S. and continue his record of achievement. They will call on Maine Senators Snowe and Collins to intervene with the Department of Homeland Security on Selvin's behalf, and to press for action on the DREAM Act in September as one step towards comprehensive immigration reform.
