U.S. Senate Candidate Randy Parraz: "Don't Deport Marlen Moreno"

Randy Parraz is currently seeking the Democrat nomination for U.S. Senator in Arizona.  In May, Parraz also was the only candidate outside John McCain's office in Tuscon supporting the historic civil disobedience of the DREAM Act 5.

I'm happy to see he's still taking leading role in supporting migrant youth in Arizona when we need him through the following statement in support of Marlen Moreno:

Phoenix, AZ - Democratic Senate Candidate Randy Parraz today called on Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to halt the deportation of Marlen Moreno Peralta, which is now planned for August 8th. Marlen was born in Mexico and brought to the United States when she was 13 years old. On March 28, 2008, Marlen was detained by ten heavily armed deputies, and she spent four and a half months in jail.

Marlen was the first member of her family to graduate from high school in 2002. She is married to a legal permanent resident and is the mother of two boys, 3-years old and 10-months.

"Ripping families apart because the Congress has failed to address comprehensive immigration reform is wrong," said Parraz. "The deportation of students who would qualify under the DREAM Act, regardless of their education or social status, has got to stop until the Congress takes up the issue, hopefully this year."

Parraz noted that this past June, a Harvard University student's deportation was stopped after activists and elected leaders protested.

Parraz, along with Senators Richard Lugar (R-IN) and Dick Durbin (D-IL), support halting deportations of all eligible Dream Act students until the Congress takes up immigration reform. If passed, the DREAM Act would allow qualified young people who were brought to the U.S. without documentation to adjust their status to "conditional permanent resident" so long as the student meets the requirements.

"Marlen has built a loving family, with two beautiful children and a caring husband, and a deep belief in education. Our politics should not be so polluted that we are willing to use this beautiful mother as a ping-pong ball for political rhetoric."
