Sarah Palin and the Alaskan Renconquista
Picture: From Alaskan Independence Party Website It seems as if Sarah Palin is all over the internet. The media has gone wild with analysis of her.
Here's one perspective you've probably missed. Manuel Guzman at Latino Politico and Roberto Lovato at Of America have brought to light hilarious irony.
While nativists swipe at the fantasm that is Aztlan and the Reconquista, the supposed plan by Mexican migrants to take over the southwest portion of the United States, it appears that Sarah Palin has legitimate connections to Alaska's version of the Reconquista.
The Los Angeles Times reports (sombrero tip to Latino Politico):
Here's what Roberto Lovato has to say about that:
Tonight, Sarah Palin will be nominated as the Republican Party's choice for vice president of the United States.Where are the nativists crying out about this affront to the U.S.'s sovereignty? They are of course no where to be found.
But back home, she has cheered the work of a tiny party that long has pushed for a statewide vote on whether Alaska should secede from those same United States. And her husband, Todd, was a member of the party for seven years.
Michael Finnegan - Los Angeles Times (3 September 2008)
Here's what Roberto Lovato has to say about that:
Sarah Palin's mantra-like repetitions of the Aztlan-sounding "Alaska" may finally provide the conservative commentators their most definitive lead in their relentless hunt for the secessionist menace. The big difference is that the more dangerous secessionist movement will not be led by white people belonging openly to an actual political party whose candidates (including a former governor) and initiatives are included on state voting ballots, a secessionist party ignored by the media and lauded loudly by politicians like Palin for their "inspiring convention," and encouraged by her to "keep up the good work."Too funny. I couldn't help laughing when I read these posts.Roberto Lovato - New America Media (4 September 2008)

oh, the knots they are tying themselves in. thx for the linkage
No problem, Manny. Love the way you both tied that back to Reconquista. Hilarious.
