stop the SAVE Act

| | Comments ()
The House GOP is pushing the SAVE Act to the floor, suspecting they only have a few months left to do as much legislative damage as possible before increased Democratic majorities make it too difficult, and desperate for a “gay marriage scare” type assault on a vulnerable minority that they hope will pay political dividends.

If you ever thought you might get involved on this issue or think you might want to in the future, don’t wait … NOW is the time.

Call your representative at 202-225-3121 (or find your rep's number here) and ask them not to sign the petition to discharge H.R. 4088, the Shuler-Tancredo Bill (the SAVE Act), and to vote NO on the SAVE Act if it comes to the floor.  Or utilize this simple online form to make your opinion heard.

The discharge petition currently pushed by the GOP needs 218 signatures—at last count, it had 163

Below is the letter I wrote to my Representative in Brooklyn last night.  Chances are you may live in a district where your Representative is considering voting for the bill, or perhaps is even a sponsor—your voice is needed even more in this case than those of us who live in “safe” districts.  Even those of us in safe districts can encourage our reps to voice opposition to this bill and actively fight it.  Here’s my letter:

Please oppose the SAVE Act.  It would be incredibly destructive to our economy in a time of recession, and more importantly, destructive to communities of color around the country.  Immigrants are not some "other" to be feared, they are us--our families, our friends, teachers, coworkers, employees, and bosses.

I realize that being from New York, you may not need much prodding to refrain from voting for this bill.  But I encourage you to stake some political capital on this issue--I predict it will pay off down the road.  Securing immigrants' rights is the preeminent civil rights battle of our day, and the years to come will be kind to those who are on the right side of history and who risk something while the outcome is uncertain.

So I encourage you to be vocal, to fight nativism and corrosive restrictionism, tendencies that are antithetical to all that New Yorkers stand for.  As an immigrant of sorts--from Utah to New York--I encourage you to oppose the misleadingly named SAVE Act.
